Documentary 'SEX TEENS AND STDs" (Kafayat Shonubi)
Thursday, 18 November 2010
Voiceover Script (Victoria Nwaeze)
For over a period of years sex and young people have been a growing issue all around the UK. In 2008 the NHS survey national statistics show that 57% of young people between the age of 16-19 were having unprotected sex. In 2009 it was seen that 47% of young people between the ages of 13-15 are sexually active and are either not using contraception or not using it right. Is this because they have been led astray by their peers or have these young people not been receiving contraception advice and information early enough? We follow pregnant teen Nafisat to explore her view on young people and contraception?
Young people friendly are a very popular service that provides free contraception and advice for young people under 25 all around the UK.
Sex is becoming very popular amongst young people between the age of 13-15 as the years go on. Why is there a rapid increase in teenage pregnancy and teenage abortion? Is it because they are being exposed to information about contraception at an early age, which may enable them to gain ideas or is it something the British society will just have to sit back and watch, so the question we need to ask ourselves, young people and contraception is it right ?
There are different views and opinions on young people and contraception, some people argue that it is wrong that young people between the age of 13 and 15 should not be exposed to such information at an early age, however some people argue that young people of that age should be receiving contraception and advice on it, as if they do think of ever having sexual intercourse they would be fully aware of how to use and the consequences of not using it, sexual health advisor demonstrates how to use a condom safely.
Another issue is if it is morally wrong? As some religions such as Christianity and Islamic faith believe in no sex before marriage therefore anything surrounding the subject is for bided.

Software (Kafayat Shonubi)
This are the software we would be using during the production of our documentary.
- Blogger: This is the software we would put every piece we provide relating to our production e.g notes and images.
- Scribd: We used this in order to make our blog look presentable and less messy. This is to make it much more easier to read and understand to people who view our blog.
- Final Cut Pro: This is the software used to log, capture and edit our footage to make it look verisimilitude.
- Bubbl.us: This is used to create the brainstorm of our documentary.
- Slide: This is used to create slideshows for our images and to make them presentable.

Voiceover Profile (Kafayat Shonubi)
Name:- Roxanne Darkin
Gender:- Female
We have used Roxanne as our voiceover because we feel her voice would make our documentary more effective than a mans voice. This is because our documentary is more dominated to the females than the males because the main use of contraception been handed out to young people is to reduce the amount of teenage pregnancy in UK and to protect them from STDs . This would enable viewers to engage with our documentary.

Week 8
This week was the half-term and we all just carried on with work that had to be done on the blog. Also we contacted the school nurse about an interview and we are waiting for her to get back to us as she is quite busy. This week we also contacted the vicar of a church next to our college and we are trying to schedule a date to film.

Change Of Title (Group)
As we carried out more research on documentary titles we found that our title didn't really fit in with the documentary titles which BBC 3 used. After a lot of consideration we have decided to change our title to 'Sex,Teens & STD's'. We feel that this title will draw more attention to our documentary and it stands out much more than our old title.

Week 7
This week we finally went to film the interview with the pharmacist, however when we got back to the editing suite and watched the footage we found that the lighting was bad and so was the framing as the room we used to interview was really small so as the camera person i found it quite difficult to follow the rule of thirds. We did get good cutaways from that location so we are going to include those in the documentary and hopefully our second interview with the second pharmacist goes well. To ensure that there aren't any problems we will go to the location to make sure the lighting and everything is good so that we can film the interview successfully.
We hope to have finished filming all our interviews and a majority of our cut-aways by the 8th of November, this way we can get started on the final drafts of our posters and our radio trailers. Also as next week is half-term we hope to finish everything on our blog and i will be changing the blog layout once again as i feel i can create a better layout than the one we have now.

Newspapers,Statistics and Graphs - (Victoria Nwaeze)
Here are a few articles, graphs, newspapers and statistics we have looked into, in relation to our subject matter. As a group we were also thinking of adding some of these into our actual documentary as these articles, newspapers, statistics ect are quite informative, which is the category our documentary falls into.
Contraception newspapers, articles and statistics
Contraception newspapers, articles and statistics
BBFC (Victoria Nwaeze)

The BBFC states that when you are choosing an age certificate for your production you have to take in consideration :
Discrimination
Nudity
Drugs
Horror
Imitable behaviour
Sex
Language
Theme
violence
For this documentary "Young people and contraception-Is it right?" we have chosen to use the age certificate of 12, we came to this decision by taking into consideration the BBFC standards and our targeted audience which is 13-19. In relation with our target audience we thought 12 will be the best, even though we are not targeting 12 year olds, having looked at the BBFC standards of a 12 certificate we feel the content of our documentary matches the criteria, also as the next step up would have been 15 which was not realy appropriate.
Criteria of the certification 12 according to the BBFC

Discrimination
Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be
endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive
discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely
to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.
Drugs
Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and shouldnot be glamorised or give instructional detail.
Horror
Moderate physical and psychological threat may bepermitted, provided disturbing sequences are not
frequent or sustained.
Imitable behaviour
Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide andself-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied, or appear pain or harm free. Easily accessible
weapons should not be glamorised.
Language
Moderate language is allowed. The use of strong language (for example, ‘fuck’) must be infrequent.
Nudity
Nudity is allowed, but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet.
Sex
Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed.Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable foryoung teenagers. Frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable.
Theme
Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.
Violence
Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context.

Week 6
So far this week we filmed a woman who teaches at a secondary school and deals with teenagers. We wanted to get her opinion on the subject matter also we asked if it was required of teachers to provide students with contraception. The interview was very successful and everything went according to plan. Due to some unforeseen circumstances we were unable to interview the pharmacist this week however we have rescheduled the interview for next week. In addition to this we carried on doing more work on our blog and i changed the layout as i didn't think it related to our subject matter.
By next week we hope to interview a nurse who works with young people and two pharmacists with opposing views on our subject matter,

Similar Documentaries (Abigail Odum)
This video is quite similar to what we wish to do in our documentary. It shows young people and people who work in the health sector talking about contraception. There are some cutaways when people are talking however it doesn't really follow the format/conventions of a documentary.
In addition to this there is a crucial element missing in the video which is a voice-over as it binds everything together and helps the audience gain a deeper understanding. We will be including a voice-over in our documentary also we will include graphics and cutaways.
The framing has not been executed in the correct way, we have been watching some documentarys online and they have given us many ideas of how we want our interviews to be framed. The video is very simple and straight to the point this is a technique we will be using in our documentary as we want to keep our audience engaged throughout our documentary.

Sound Track (Kafayat Shonubi)
5 Audio Track by abiolavick321
This is the sound we have picked to use in our documentary as we would be using one sound throughout. We as a group chose this sound from an album named "Late Night Session" track 5 because we think it is best suited for our documentary. As our documentary is about young people and contraception we had to find a slow sound that would flow with the task. We believe this would have a great impact on our audience because the album name really relates to our topic and we believe it is going to attract our audiences because we got their opinion of what they think about the sound been heard in our documentary and we got a positive reply.

Week 5
We got in contact with a pregnant teenager and she seemed very enthusiastic about the interview and she agreed for us to interview her. We filmed the interview and she spoke about how she learnt about contraception and her personal views on young people and contraception. We learnt a lot through this interview and we logged and captured all the footage.
By next week we hope to have plenty more cutaways and also more newspaper articles about our subject. We also hope to interview the mother of a teenager and also a pharmacist who works with the YPF.

This is the logo we would be using in our documentary. The logo stands for Havering College TV. This is an abbreviation of The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). We have designed our logo too look like BBC as it is the most popular logo and because it helps our audiences know what it is and it also helps us because we know our audiences understand what we are trying to portray to them. This logo would be placed on the top left corner of our documentary.

Font (Kafayat Shonubi)
I have watched several documentaries to see the ways in which fonts are used. This is to be able to produce my documentary to the standard of national TV documentaries. Most documentaries I've watched used the font 'Helvetica'.
Today Helvetica the typeface is everywhere: metro signs, airline logos, street ads, T-shirts, office software. When researching about this font i also found out that the font has a documentary of it own. Most of the websites i looked at stated that "Helvetica is among the most widely used sans-serif typefaces". I will be using this particular font in my documentary.

Documentary film techniques - Abigail Odum
Documentary codes and conventions- (Abigail Odum)
Documentary Research - (Abigail Odum)
Documentary
A documentary is a media text, which deals with "real" issues in the world today. Unlike a drama or a soap opera it does not have a continuing storyline. For this a voiceover/narrator or presenter is used to link one part of the programme to the next. All documentaries use this convention or else they would not be able to flow from scene to scene.
There are several different types of documentaries however the 2 most common are; the classic documentary that presents facts and evidence on a particular subject and the docu-soap that focuses on several "characters" or a specific place. In addition to this there are many companies today who produce and broadcast documentaries such as BBC one's recent documentary 'Ban the Burkha?'.
Genre
The documentary genre has a range of purposes, from the simple selection and recording of events to a polemic text that attemps to persuade the audience into a specific set of opinions. Audiences must identify that purpose early on and will therefore decode documentary texts differentlt to fictional narratives.
Modes
Identifying modes of documentary is a way of categorising different types of documentary. There are ova laps in the different modes and documentaries will often feature conventions from more than one mode. Bill Nichols (2001) defines 6 modes of documentary:
Expository/direct address :- This uses a narrator to address the audience directly and to present an interpretation of what they are seeing on screen. Because of the disembodied nature of the narration, this form of documenatry is sometimes known as the voice-of-God mode.
Observational (fly-on-the-wall):- As technology advanced by the 1960's and cameras became smaller and lighter, people were able to document life in a less intrusive manner.
Participatory:- The encounter between film-maker and subject is recorded as the film-maker actively engages with the situation they are documenting.
Reflexive:- This demonstrates consciousness of the process of reading documentary, and engages actively with the issues of realism and representation, acknowledging the presence of the viewer and the modality of their judgements.
Performative:- This mode acknowledges the emotional and subjective aspects of documentary, and presents ideas as part of a context, having different meanings for different people. This is often produced in an autobiographical nature. This is the mode which suites our documentary.
Poetic:- The film-maker gives a subjective view. There is also a particular mood which is created and enhanced with music, unrelated shots are edited together and also linked by a mood or music

Potential Target Audience (Victoria Nwaeze)
As a group we have decided that our potential target audience will be both male and female between the age of 13 to 19. We chose this age range as we feel that the topic we chose 'contraception' is an arising matter that affects everyone especially young people between these ages. We also choose to keep the gender both male and female as factors relating to contraception effect both genders.
Below are examples of people that we will be targeting.
